Children attending the clinic received a range of free dental services, including x-rays, cleanings, fillings, sealants, and extractions, with a total estimated value of almost $26,000. In addition to dental care and free oral health education, the young patients had the opportunity to meet Homer the Dragon, the official mascot of the Charlotte Knights baseball team, along with other TeamSmile mascots. The event also featured face painting to create a fun and memorable dental treatment experience for the children.

Andrea Frohning, SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer at Dentsply Sirona, expressed her satisfaction with the event’s impact and emphasized the importance of the long-term partnership with TeamSmile. “We are delighted to see another great turnout for this free dental clinic,” Frohning said. “Through our long-term partnership with TeamSmile, we are able to help improve access to oral care for those in need, enhance health outcomes for children in our local community, and foster the understanding that a healthy mouth is essential for overall health.”

Global Clinical Case Contest 2023-2024: Dental Students Honored for Their Outstanding Restorative Work https://www.dentistrytoday.com/global-clinical-case-contest-2023-2024-dental-students-honored-for-their-outstanding-restorative-work/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 11:11:58 +0000 https://www.dentistrytoday.com/?p=117069 Presenting excellence in dental restorations, 411 students from a total of 127 universities in over 20 countries took part in this year’s global competition by participating in regional preliminary rounds. The regional winners came together for the final in Constance, one of Dentsply Sirona’s sites in Germany, to present their work to an international jury. The jury consisted of Dr. Britta Hahn, University Hospital Würzburg (Germany), Dr. Ian Cline, dentist at King’s College London (UK) and Prof. Gaetano Paolone from the University of Milan (Italy).

Dentsply Sirona,

GCCC judges, students and Dentsply Sirona team at Dentsply Sirona Site in Constance (Germany).

The cases submitted were challenging anterior and posterior restorations that were implemented either directly or indirectly in the CAD/CAM workflow. Only Dentsply Sirona products were used, for example CEREC Tessera, Calibra Ceram and Prime&Bond. The finalists of the Global Clinical Case Contest received awards and an invitation to Constance.

High-caliber final with deserving award winners

1st place – Winning case: fractured upper right central incisor

The winner was N Movina Wu from the National Cheng Kung University, China Taiwan. She presented the case of a fractured upper right central incisor. After confirming the tooth’s vitality, a minimally invasive direct composite restoration was chosen. A wax-up cast aided alignment, and the restoration involved shade matching with Neo Spectra composite, bevel preparation, and layered composite application. Finishing and polishing were completed with the Enhance® Finishing system and Prisma Gloss materials, achieving a natural-looking result.

2nd place – Diastema closure post orthognathic and orthodontic treatment

Second place was awarded to Qinyang Li from the Sichuan University, China, with the case of a patient who needed diastema closure after completing orthognathic and orthodontic treatment. Direct composite restoration was used, guided by digital design for precise reshaping. The process involved etching, bonding with Prime&Bond Universal Adhesive, and using Dentsply Sirona ceram·x composites. Finishing and polishing were done with the Enhance® system, resulting in successful diastema closure and improved anterior aesthetics.

3rd place – Aesthetics procedure of upper anterior teeth post orthodontics treatment

Third place was received by Mayar Mostafa from the Alexandria University, Egypt, for a patient case in which a 23-year-old female sought treatment for poor aesthetics of her upper anterior teeth after orthodontics, showing decalcification and staining. Composite veneers were chosen for their minimal invasiveness. Following digital smile analysis and a 3D resin model, the procedure included rubber dam isolation, selective enamel etching with 37% phosphoric acid, and layering Neo Spectra ST composites. Finishing and polishing were done with the Enhance system. This resulted in a natural-looking, glossy finish in a single visit, providing the patient with a new smile.

Impressive commitment and skills showcased at GCCC

The jury praised the high standard of the cases submitted. “The restorations presented were produced by the students with great personal commitment and technical skill,” jury member Dr. Britta Hahn summed up. “This passion was evident in all the participants’ work and was impressive. All the finalists outstandingly showed what possibilities exist with modern materials and workflows to provide patients with a beautiful smile.”

The finalists appreciated the live event in Constance, to which they were invited by Dentsply Sirona together with their tutors, as an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in advanced dental restorations, compete with fellow students, and present to a panel of experts. “It was a privilege to be part of a competition with such talented young dentists from all over the world. The award confirms my ambition to foster dental health and provide patients with state-of-the-art treatments,” said N Movina Wu. “I felt truly inspired by listening to the other delegates’ cases and learning from them and the judges’ feedback. I can only recommend young dentists to take part in a competition like the GCCC to share your experience, learn and be inspired for your professional career.”

Dentsply Sirona supports young scientists

“The Global Clinical Case Contest is an important international dental contest for the next generation of dentists – both for the students themselves and for the company,” emphasized Dr. Rainer Seemann, Vice President Clinical Affairs and Workflows at Dentsply Sirona. “We want to support future dentists to advance confidently by helping them provide their patients with the best possible care right from the start. For this reason, Dentsply Sirona promotes innovative training programs with state-of-the-art technology through extensive cooperation with universities around the world.”

The Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest has been taking place since 2004/2005 academic year. The competition is aimed at dental students enrolled in a college or university at the time of entering. Participants document their case in text and images and are supported by a tutor from their university.

Applications for the GCCC 2024-2025, the 20th anniversary of this contest, can be submitted now. More information about Dentsply Sirona’s Global Clinical Case Contest can be found here: www.dentsplysirona.com/gccc.

Transform Your Dental Practice with DS Core’s Comprehensive Digital Dentistry Platform https://www.dentistrytoday.com/transform-your-dental-practice-with-ds-cores-comprehensive-digital-dentistry-platform/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 14:25:41 +0000 https://www.dentistrytoday.com/?p=116793 DS Core is an open platform solution to unlock the power of digital dentistry for dental labs and practices alike. Easy order acceptance, communication of design proposals with the dentist in real-time, and seamless integration of data into the lab’s preferred software – and that’s just the beginning.

Today, thousands of labs globally already use DS Core. Dentsply Sirona is now introducing new functionalities for labs on DS Core, enabling labs to collaborate in an excellent way with the dental practices they serve.

Dentsply Sirona

Gain an overview with the dashboard, collaborate with other labs, take dentists with you on your digital journey

Order management has received a major boost with the enhanced dashboard. Orders and media are listed under client and patient names for quick and easy access to the relevant information.

Another new feature is the ability to outsource jobs to other labs or even DS Core Create, while retaining all the original job details and files. This is useful when working with production partners or managing temporary staff bottlenecks.

“For me, DS Core is an efficiency gain because I can find everything, I’m looking for in one place. From intraoral scans and X-rays to my orders and correspondence,” says Devaughn Fraser, Director of Highland Dental Lab in Canada. “The potential is vast: with this digital step forward, practices and labs are now digital neighbors – no longer limited by distance, time or file types. All information and communication is centralized – no need to check seemingly endless portals, emails, text messages and file transfer services. All information now cohabitates happily under one roof.”

With DS Core Light*, Dentsply Sirona is also launching a new subscription option that provides two important additional functions. It provides users with 1 TB of storage space and enables labs to store order and design files. Another very special tool: Labs can take their more conventional partner dentists with them on their digital journey. Digitized models of physical impressions and design proposals can be shared back to a dentist via DS Core, even if the dentist is not yet a DS Core user. Once dentists start using intraoral scanners to take impressions, they can send their orders via the DS Core platform that they are already familiar with.

Consistently turn DS Core into an enabler

Since its launch, DS Core has inspired many users around the world. As an open ordering and collaboration solution, it connects dentists and dental technicians in a broad network for efficient collaboration. DS Core is open for numerous data formats (dxd, .stl, .ply and .obj as well as .dcm x-ray images), enabling nearly every dentist to send data to the lab, regardless of the digital devices they use. The data input can be easily viewed by the laboratory partner via a web browser—without the need to install special software so dental technicians are free to choose which lab software they use to design or fabricate their applications.

“Dentistry is a team sport, and dental labs are an essential part of the dental care team. That’s why we are continuously developing DS Core to enable the dental care team to advance with confidence and play together effectively. The latest updates are specifically made for dental labs” said Max Milz, Group Vice President Connected Technology Solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “With DS Core, dental labs can efficiently work together with practices using digital impressions, designs and even X-ray data, supported by real-time chat functionalities. DS Core is a single channel for exchanging many types of data securely, which is a huge improvement compared to the usual fragmented communication channels used today and a significant step towards a new era of connected dentistry.”

According to Andreas Frank, Executive Vice President, Chief Business Officer at Dentsply Sirona: “At Dentsply Sirona, we partner with dental professionals to advance our shared vision of transforming dentistry. We are committed to enhancing patient outcomes and supporting practice success. DS Core positions our customers to advance with confidence on all fronts.”

A highly relevant selection of Master Classes provided in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience as well as valuable CE credits. These were a highlight of the Summit and were sold out in advance. Participants had the opportunity to engage with experts in smaller, interactive settings, enhancing their skills and understanding of advanced implant techniques through courses such as Mastering the surgical techniques around implant therapy. Another example of the future-focused Master Classes was The digital dental practice—driving practice efficiency through technology. Speakers also addressed important themes such as The Importance of DNA in implant design and Oral health and the role of the patient.

One of the standout sessions at the conference was the “Monday Morning Patient,” moderated by Malene Hallund and Dean Lyndon Cooper, the two scientific chairs of the Summit. This session featured an expert panel including Mischa Krebs, Alberto Monje, Joe Schmidt, and Stijn Vervaeke. Together, they discussed various cases from initial assessment through planning and treatment, encouraging collaborative problem solving and peer-to-peer learning. Attendees, both on stage and in the audience, actively participated by voting on their preferred approaches to these challenging “Monday morning cases.”

“This event was an exceptional platform for learning and networking,” said Dr. Mark Montana, prosthodontist from Tempe, AZ. “The presentations and workshops were highly informative and educational events like these are valuable as dentistry is rapidly evolving and being impacted by digital technology.”

Unveiling of Enhanced Product Range of Regenerative Solutions

Participants were introduced to the newly enhanced Symbios Allograft regenerative solutions, consisting of a diverse range of products for different clinical applications, including Granules bone grafts, Putty bone grafts, and Acellular Dermal Matrix. Experts from Dentsply Sirona were on hand in the exhibition area to answer questions. This enhanced range was introduced for the first time at the event in Miami and is now available in the USA and Canada.

Stig Hansson Award Presentation

The Stig Hansson Award recognizes pioneering innovation and research within implant dentistry. It honors the legacy of Stig Hansson († 2023), a former employee of Dentsply Sirona and a pioneer in the development of modern dental implants. He not only invented the Astra Tech Implant System but also brought the principles of biomechanics to implant design, resulting in TioBlast, the first moderately rough implant surface, and MicroThread, retention elements on the implant neck. His work created a new gold standard that holds to this day.

SureSmile Aligners Provide Better Experience for Dentists and Patients https://www.dentistrytoday.com/suresmile-aligners-provide-better-experience-for-dentists-and-patients/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 14:10:02 +0000 https://www.dentistrytoday.com/?p=116133 Megan Weisenberger, DMD, discusses implementing a new treatment method into her practice.

Q: Please provide an overview of your career in dentistry.

A: After graduating from Case Western in 2010, I returned to Cincinnati, initially as an associate, before acquiring my fee-for-service practice in 2017. It’s fully digitalized, including PrimeScan (Dentsply Sirona).

Dentsply Sirona, suresmile aligners

SureSmile Aligners deliver predictable results and happy patients.

Q: When and why did you begin working with SureSmile Clear Aligners (Dentsply Sirona)?

A: I began using SureSmile Aligners in 2020 due to increasing malocclusion and restorative cases. I trusted Dentsply Sirona and colleagues’ positive experiences with SureSmile, so I was confident moving into their clear aligner workflow. The knowledge they brought to the system gave me confidence.

Q: How do you identify/diagnose a patient malocclusion? What steps do you take to educate patients on the condition and its potential impact on oral health?

A: We co-diagnose with our patients using Primescan scans or photos. We review and discuss oral health impacts of crowding, teeth with fractures/recession, and airway and sleep apnea issues.

Q: What role does scanning patients play in helping you do this?

A: Scanning all patients, both new and established, aids in discussing what a patient may not like about his or her smile and facilitates a co-diagnosis.

Q: How are hygiene and prevention affected in your patients who use SureSmile Clear Aligners?

A: In my experience, both completed and in-process SureSmile patients are very invested in keeping their new smiles healthy, striving to keep on top of their oral hygiene, and benefiting from easier cleaning with straightened teeth.

suresmile aligners

SureSmile Aligners provide outstanding patient value with the Complete Case.

Q: How can SureSmile Clear Aligners provide a better experience for both dentists and patients?

A: In my experience, SureSmile offers predictable treatment with fewer refinements and attachments. In addition, straight-trim line aligners allow for fewer attachments, which patients appreciate, and more predictable movements, which lead to less refinements. Being able to predict treatment outcomes more precisely allowed me to become more confident offering ortho in my practice.

Q: How have SureSmile Clear Aligners impacted the predictability of your patients’ treatment outcomes?

A: My continuing experience with SureSmile enhances the predictability of treatment outcomes. Even when I started with more straightforward relapse cases, I found that the amount of time predicted was close to the actual treatment time.

Q: Do you believe the trim lines and treatment planning approach of SureSmile Clear Aligners result in fewer attachments and refinements? Why is that, and how does that benefit your patients and practice?

A: In my opinion, straight trim lines reduce attachments that may stain or irritate and also may require fewer refinements. I believe predictable outcomes of SureSmile are due to their treatment planning approach, combining synergistic movements and separating out antagonist movements during treatment planning that allow for more predictable movements and can decrease treatment time.

Q: How does the open platform integration of SureSmile Clear Aligners make it easy for dentists to switch from another aligner brand regardless of the type of intraoral scanner in their practices?

A: SureSmile is a completely open platform—if you can export an STL, you can be a Sure-Smile provider, regardless of intraoral scanner. This amazing digital workflow is open to everyone.

Q: How does the SureSmile Complete Case enhance the value for patients seeking orthodontic treatments?

A: The Complete Case includes 3 years of unlimited refinements plus the SureSmile VPro High-Frequency Device, which may provide added comfort and accelerate anterior teeth movement. Also, the patient receives SureSmile whitening near case completion. In my experience, this enhances patient value and compliance.

Q: How has using the online education offerings on SureSmileU and DS Academy enhanced your professional development and patient care?

A: They are both so valuable. SureSmile U and DS Academy provide valuable education for professional development from basic to more advanced content.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with Dentistry Today readers?

A: Switching to SureSmile, for me, has been transformative, offering significant ROI and a supportive community.

The company urges dental professionals to take part in the upcoming FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) Sustainability in Dentistry Summit in June, as well as to apply for the FDI 2024 Sustainability Award, which is co-sponsored by Dentsply Sirona and aims to bring global recognition to those who take the most outstanding or innovative measures to further sustainability in dental practice.

Dentsply Sirona

Dentsply Sirona invites dental professionals to participate in the FDI Sustainability Summit to learn about eco-friendly dental practices.

“On World Environment Day, a day that advocates for awareness and action for the protection of the environment, we are once again reminded that the time to act is now – our industry needs to become more sustainable and every single one of us can and should contribute,” says Tony Johnson, SVP, Chief Supply Chain Officer, and Executive Sponsor for ESG at Dentsply Sirona. “A good entry point is coming up in a couple of weeks – the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Summit, which will offer plenty of actionable information and lasting motivation for everyone dedicated to making a difference.”

Dentsply Sirona will be present with a digital booth and panel talk

This year’s FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Summit will take place entirely virtually from June 18th to 20th, from 4 to 5.30 pm CEST daily. Dentsply Sirona, recently named “One of America’s Greenest Companies 2024” by Newsweek, invites participants to visit the digital company booth at the event, which will provide a host of sustainability resources and insights into projects and initiatives supported by the company. There is also a chance to ask questions on the topic of sustainability. Dr. Rainer Seemann, Vice President Global Clinical Affairs and Workflows at Dentsply Sirona, will also be on the ‘Sustainability and Education’ panel on June 19th, discussing educational resources for dental professionals provided by Dentsply Sirona as well as by the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry initiative, of which Dentsply Sirona is a co-founding partner.

Registrations for attendance and sustainability award open now

Dental professionals interested in attending the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Summit can do so for free on the FDI website here. In addition, dental professionals can apply until July 1st for the FDI 2024 Sustainability Award here which is sponsored by Dentsply Sirona as well as Haleon, Sunstar, Kulzer, SDI and Colgate. The award aims to promote sustainable dentistry practices by selecting the most outstanding or innovative measures taken to further sustainability. The winners will be chosen by the FDI Dental Practice Committee and will be announced in September 2024 at FDI World Dental Congress in Istanbul.

At Dentsply Sirona, we believe that collective action will drive invaluable progress within our industry – as a result we invite everyone to take the time to attend the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Summit and gain new insights, gather valuable knowledge and find like-minded people to help make our industry more sustainable”, says Andreas Frank, EVP, Chief Business Officer.

“Reducing the environmental footprint of the dental industry is a central concern of the FDI. We are delighted to have dedicated partners such as Dentsply Sirona at our side who help us spread the knowledge of how sustainable practices can be implemented in dentistry,” says Dr. Steven Mulligan, member of the Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team of the FDI. “If you are a dental professional, I urge you to register for the summit and join us in our efforts to make our industry more sustainable.”

Dr. Anthony Ponzio Interview – 2024 Chicago Midwinter Conference https://www.dentistrytoday.com/dr-anthony-ponzio-interview-2024-chicago-midwinter-conference/ Thu, 30 May 2024 09:50:12 +0000 https://www.dentistrytoday.com/?p=115828 Listen to the recent interview with Dr. Anthony Ponzio, DDS, on why he uses SureSmile Clear Aligners and how he leverages DS Core for a fully digital workflow that benefits his practice and patients.

Treatment planning has never been easier with support from the SureSmile Digital Lab and software that works with most intraoral scanners, including PrimeScan.

Regarding the Digital Lab, Dr. Ponzio said, “A real person is reviewing the treatment plan—it’s human-to-human interaction, not just software.”

Doctors may feel that refinements are just part of supplying clear aligner treatment, but with 3 out of 4 SureSmile patients not needing refinements, SureSmile Clear Aligners provide the predictable results doctors want and patients expect.

“It’s a great system; generally, we see things track really well. We see a lot fewer refinements with SureSmile® than I have with other systems. The way the technology is designed, in the actual aligners, we see fewer attachments and quicker treatment times,” Dr. Ponzio added.

SureSmile Aligners also provide outstanding patient value with the Complete Case option, which includes not only aligners at a flat-rate price but also supplies faster, brighter smiles by including the SureSmile Whitening Kit and the SureSmile VPro High-Frequency Device.*
